A little cottage with a long story: the heart behind Captains Cottage

Thoughtfully cared for and lovingly shared, Captains Cottage is nestled in Hobart’s inner residential neighbourhood, within easy walking distance of the CBD, Salamanca and Battery Point, offering convenience wrapped in charm. The surrounding streets are dotted with beloved cafés for your morning coffee, award-winning restaurants and chefs, intimate bars, craft breweries, and specialty larders showcasing Tasmania’s best local produce.

Originally built for a ship’s captain in the mid-1800s, this heritage-listed cottage carries the patina of time. While the land title was granted in 1826, its exact build date remains part of its quiet mystery, somewhere between the 1830s and 1870s. Over the years, we have made considered improvements, gradually restoring and refining her with deep respect for her history.

One of our favourite features is the deep claw-foot bath, positioned to frame views through French doors into the courtyard garden. When roses are in bloom and the light softens in the late afternoon, it becomes a little moment of luxury and calm. The garden itself is yours to enjoy. Fragrant, leafy, and walled for privacy, as a quiet extension of the cottage.

Guests have exclusive use of the cottage, courtyard garden and private off-street parking. Inside, layers of natural fabrics, warm textures and simple luxuries make the space feel instantly inviting. The kitchen is fully equipped for those who love to cook with fresh Tasmanian produce, from morning breakfasts to slow dinners at home. Upstairs, the loft bedroom features a queen bed dressed in luxury linen sheets, soft, breathable, and perfect for slow mornings.
